She was born to the late Walker and Aruella (Russell) Lightning. She was the eldest of eight children. She was a graduate of Carver Comprehensive High School (Class of 1955, Atlanta, Georgia). She earned an Associate's Degree in Cosmetology. Vivian worked as a dispatcher for High Point Cab Company for 15 years. She was also a member of Welcome Grove Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, under the leadership of the late Reverend Walker. She was known to everyone as "Bu or Bugarette".
