James Winfred (Jay) Lewis was born on May 26, 1939 in Columbus, Georgia. He was the third child born to Elijah and Ozeal Lewis. James attended elementary and secondary schools in the~ city of hi s birth and graduated f rom Spencer High School in 1957. 
He moved from Columbus- to Boston, Massachusetts in 1964 and spent his remaining years living and working in this city. For most of his working years he was employed as a Chef for Fontaine'.<:; Restaurant :~~n Dedh2m, ~~.'lssacht!s et ts. His conscientious labor and Godgiven talents brought many delightful meals to a multitude of people. 
James united in fellowship with the Mt. Sinai Primitive Baptist Church of Columbus, Georgia. He was also in regular attendance at the St. John's Missionary Baptist Church throughout his residence in Boston. 
James was a quiet person, but always expressed his love and concern for his family and friends. He enjoyed life and was able to bring enjoyment into the lives of others. 
James was called home on Thursday, November 14, 1991. He leaves to mourn his passing, two daughters, Brande 0\vens (Boston) and Tara ("Tee") (Virginia); his parents, Elijah and Ozeal Lewis (Georgia); five brothers, Eddie (New Jersey), Sylvester and Michael (Atlanta), Elijah, Jr. (Martinez, GA.) and Lloyd (Columbus, GA.); four sisters, Lillie Morris (Boston), Sandra Miller (Atlanta), Martha Williams and Ozeal Street (Columbus, GA.) and a host of other relatives and dear friends who thank God for his life
