Carter, Presiding Elder The Obituary Abner Devoe Hardeman, Jr., the third son of the late Rev. and Mrs. Abner Devoe Hardeman, Sr. was born on September 16, 1915 in Houston County of Kathleen, Georgia. He attended Washington High in Atlanta, Georgia and Hudson High School in Macon, Georgia. At an early age, Abner was called A.D. not by his family, but by his many friends. A.D. was converted at the tender age of five and was baptized by his father, The Rev. Hardeman, at Trinity A.M.E. Church in south Atlanta, Georgia. God blessed A.D. with a beautiful tenor voice. He and his two brothers, B.A. and Gabe, along with another friend formed a quartet. This dedicated singing quartet sang on many special programs at Cosmopolitan A.M.E. Church which was pastored by their father. In 1936, he married Bertha Jackson and to this happy marriage God blessed them with a son, Alphonso Devoe Hardeman. A.D. Worked at the Ford Motor Company in Detroit, Michigan where he retired in the late 1970's. He and his brother, Gabriel, helped install the big new organ in old St. Paul on Powell Street under the administration of their father's pastorage. In 1988, A.D. joined St. Paul A.M.E. Church where he became a Junior Trustee while his brother The Rev. Gabriel S. Hardeman was pastor. He was also a trustee in several other churches in Philadelphia and Atlanta. On Tuesday, May 21, 1991, the Lord called Abner Devoe Hardeman from labor to reward. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Mrs. Bertha Hardeman; a son, Alphonso Hardeman, New York City, New York; two brothers, Rev. Gabriel S. Hardeman, Atlanta, Georgia and Willie Hardeman, Albany, Georgia; three sister-in-laws, Mrs. Daisy M. Hardeman, Atlanta, Georgia, Mrs. Georgia Hardeman, Albany, Georgia, and Mrs. Betty Hardeman, Daytona Beach, Florida, and a host of relatives and friends.
