Atlanta, Georgia Dr. Michael N. Harris, Pastor Officiating Obituary W illiam Gilbert, the son of the late Mrs. Lucile Gilbert, was born in Atlanta, Georgia on March 27, 1918. His elementary and high school education were completed in the Atlanta Public School System where he graduated from the Booker T. Washington High School as the salutatorian ofhis class. He received the Bachelor ofArts degree from Morehouse College with high honors and the Master of Arts degree in history from Atlanta University. He furthered his education by studying educational administration at Atlanta University and law at the Woodrow Wilson College of Law. He began his teaching career as an instructor of Social Studies at the Burney Street High School in Madison, Georgia. In 1942, he was employed by the Fulton County Board of Education and for thirty-four years served in this system as elementary school principal, high school social studies teacher, department head and high school principal. When he retired in 1976, he was principal of Eva Thomas High School in College Park, Georgia. On Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 1945, he was married to Robertine M. Holland, also a teacher in the Fulton County School system. When she passed on May 24, 1991, they had been married for forty-five happy years. William Gilbert joined the Wheat Street Baptist Church when he was twelve years old and acceptedJesus as his Lord and Savior. He was baptized by Dr. D. J. Raymond Henderson. He was a member ofthe Senior Deacon Board and served as its acting Chairman and Vice Chairman. He also served on various other Church Committees and was President of the Wheat Street Baptist Church Federal Credit Union for a number ofyears. He departed this life on Wednesday, November 4, 1998. He leaves to cherish his loving memory a devoted brother, Mr. and Mrs. James E. Gilbert, Sr. (Margaret); a brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs . Spurgeon W. Holland (Wenifred) of Chicago, fllinois; three nephews, Mr. and Mrs . James Gilbert, Jr. (lLtura), Mr. and Mrs. Jacques F. Ricks (Lilly), and Mr. Albert C. Amos; five nieces, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Frye (Margaret), Mr. and Mrs . Tracey Mosley (Toni O'Neal), Mr. and Mrs . Richard Rardon (Berdie), Mrs. Doris Annette Brown, Mrs. Ruth Dismuke; grandnephews, grandnieces, cousins, other relatives, a loving and devoted friend, Ms. Magdalene Perry and many other dear friends.
