1n Memory of My Mother-ln-law 1joined the Curry family when 1married Jettie and Jesse's oldest son, James, December 29, 1999. 1 moved to Augusta from Michigan, where 1 had lived almost my entire life. 1t was the first time that 1was separated from my fam- ily and close friends. 1 am a fairly shy and re- served person; it takes me time to warm up to others. That didn't hinder Jettie and Jesse from welcoming me and accepting me as part of the . Curry family. 1grew up and lived a very differ- ent life-style from Jettie. 1n spite of the fact that ,; we had nothing in common, she was always en- . couraging and interested in my endeavors. for ttle tlrst two to three years of marriage, 1 always referred to Jettie by her given name, "Jettie," when addressing her. l'm not exactly sure when or how this happened, but one day while talking with her, the word "Mom" popped out of my mouth. She didn't comment but 1'm sure she noticed. from that time until her passing she was as true ofa mom to me as my own mother. 1 could talk to her about anything without fear or recrimination. Her presence filled a hole in my heart and her memory will continue to fill that void. The last five weeks ofher life, James and 1were privileged and honored to have her living in our home. Jettie would spend hours on the front porch reminiscing about her childhood in Arkansas, her early adult life in Chicago and the raising of her children. The day before Easter, Jettie walked me through step by step the making ofher famous sweet potato pie. My husband was insistent on me writing down her recipe so that the legacy of Mom's sweet potato pie would live on. Mom was always a hard worker and very much independent. She grasped onto as much of her independence as possible till the very end. Her death was peaceful and dignified. A lasting tender memory for me will be of my husband, James, stroking her face and softly humming "Amazing Grace," in her ear as she was drawing her last breaths. 1t just doesn't get much better than that. Mom, 1will miss you very much, but 1 know you are with our Heavenly father in the truest Paradise there is. -Your loving Daughter-In-law, Mary 1lct'ive Pa{(6earers DEACONS OF BROADWAY BAPTIST CHURCH 1-fonorary Pa((bearers GRANDSONS tF(ower 'Bearers DEACON WIVES & USHERS ~ Twenty..Third Psalm "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
