Crim Monday, May 8, 2000 -- 1:00 P.M. -- Ebenezer Baptist Church Atlanta, Georgia Rev. Dr. 1oseph Roberts, Senior Pastor Rev. 1ames Victor, Officiating Dr. Alonzo A. Crim Educator, Motivator, Counselor, Husband~ Friend and Father Dr. Alonzo A. Crim, was theyoungest ofthree children born to George and Hazel Crim, in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Crain Technical High School. He earned his Bachelor ofArts degree at George Williams College upon returningfrom active dury with the United StrUt's Nary. He went on to earn a Masters degreefrom Roosevelt University and a Doctorate in Education from Harvard University. Alonzo met and married the love ofhis life, his partner andfriend for over 50)'ears, Gwendo!Jm Motlry Crim, she preceded him in death, passing in February of this year. He began the quest that would guide him throughout his life; educating the children ofthis country. This quest would take him from teaching 7th and 8th grade math and science at Riis Elementary, to serving as principal at Whittier Elementary School, Hilliard Adult Education Center, and Wendell Phillips High School all in Chic.ago. His educational acumen led to the position of superintendent, first in the Compton California School System ( 1969-1973) and later the Atlanta Public School System in Atlanta, Georgia (1973-1988) where he became thefirst African American to lead a major metropolitan school system in the south. Dr. Crim retired from the Atlanta School System in 1988 after 15years ofdynamic leadership. Throughout his career in education, Dr. Crim was the author of ma1!Jl published works, and was affiliated with ma1!Y organizations and associations such as: the National Alliance ofBlack School Educators (NABSE), the NAACP- Life Member, Public/Private Ventures, 100 Black Men ofAtlanta, SCHOlASTIC, Inc., Phi Beta I(appa, I(appaAlpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Atlanta Rotary Club and the C. S. Mott Foundation. He was the recipient ofover nine honorary doctorate degrees from Newbenj College, SC; Gettysburg College, PA; Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.; Princeton University, Nf; Harvard University, .MA; Tuskegee University, AI; Columbia University, .NY; Roosevelt University, IL; and Valparaiso University, IN. Before his untimery passing on May 3rd, Dr. Crim worked at Georgia State University to establish the Benjamin E. Mays Professor of Urban Educational Leadership Chair and was cu"entry serving as the Professor ofEducation, Director ofFord Scholars at Spelman College, Atlanta, _GA. Dr. Alonzo A. Crim leaves a legacy oflove, hisjamiry: Timothy and Donna Crim, Susan and Willie McClendon, and Sharan and Lavon Mercer; grandchildren, Brandon, Bryan and Brent McClendon, Dionn and Alexander Mercer, and Lauren, J.Yler and Gabriell Mercer; nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, Lelia M. fa"ell and Cleora M.
