William L. (Bill) Calloway was born in 1908 on Humphries Street in South Atlanta. He is the last surviving child of six, born to Henry C. and Ann A. Calloway. Both parents passed while Bill was very young and he was reared early on by family members. When Hattie, his oldest sister married, she took Bill, (who was eleven) home with her and took over the raising of her brother. 
Bill attended Mitchell Street and Edmund Asa Ware Elementary Schools and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. He attended Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, receiving his B.S. Degree in 1933. Bill was a devoted and generous alumnus of Tuskegee throughout his lifetime. 
Following in his parents footsteps, both charter members of St. Paul A.M. E. Church, Bill joined St. Paul at the age of seven, and remained a dedicated and faithful member for over 84 years. In 1949 he founded the St. Paul Music and Dramatic Guild. Bill loved St. Paul and worked toward its betterment: serving as chairman of the Building Committee (for the current edifice), teaching Sunday School, serving as a member and teacher of the T. A. Chambliss Bible Class, leading many activities and fund-raising programs for the church and being a supportive member of the church and its' many activities through the years. 
While attending Tuskegee Institute he met the late Lillian V Strong and they were married in 1934. To this union was added a daughter, Delores. Bill was also blessed with a son, Winston that preceded him in death. 
Bill began teaching at Washington High School in 1933 and later taught at David T Howard High School. While still teaching, Bill affiliated with T M. Alexander and the Alexander Insurance Company. Later Bill and T. M co-founded Alexander-Callaway Real Estate Company with Bill becoming the president of the company. Business was good and in 1942 he resigned from teaching and devoted all of his time and interest into building the company. While at Alexander-Callaway Real Estate Company, a company that sold and developed real estate, several large residential subdivisions were built, including property on the Calloway Drive in Atlanta. 
In 1960, he founded Calloway Real Estate Company and Consolidated Mortgage Company. Bill's company developed commercial and residential properties including; Calloway Office Building and Westview Plaza, the first property on the west side of Atlanta to be built and owned by a minority developer. 
He was a pioneer and president of the Empire Real Estate Board and a charter member of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers, where he remained an Honorary President for Life until his passing. He received many honors from this professional organization. 
Bill was a Renaissance man, active in numerous civic, religious, political and social organizations: he was the first minority to be elected to the Board of Trustees of the National Council of the Y.M C. A. in 1970, the second minority appointed by then Mayor Ivan Allen to the Board of Directors of Economic Opportunity Atlanta (E.O.A.), first Black in Georgia to be inducted as a member of the Peachtree Kiwanis Club, and first Black member of the Commerce Club. Other activities included, the Community Chest, the Heart Fund Drive, the N.A.A.C.P ofAtlanta, the Hungry Club, Mutual Federal Savings Bank, the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, Morris Brown College, the Atlanta University Center, the Atlanta Community Council, Central Atlanta Progress, the Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium Authority, Citizens Trust Bank, co-founder with Mills B. Lane, a prominent Atlanta banker, of the Atlanta Action Forum and other organizations too numerous to mention. Bill loved life and was very active socially, playing bridge and other card games with his many friends. He was a member of the Graduate and Bidders Clubs, and two 'foursome' bridge groups. He was also a member of the Atlanta Guardsmen for over 25 years. 
For his many years ofservice to Atlanta, Bill was awarded numerous citations, proclamations, plaques and awards included among them was an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Morris Brown College in 1982 and a community service award from WXIA- Television. 
William L. Calloway is survived by a daughter, Delores Calloway Harper; two grandsons, William L. Calloway II and Winston Calloway; a granddaughter, Deborah Calloway Duke; a great-grandson, William L. Calloway, III; great-granddaughter, DeShannon Duke; nephew, Dwight Calloway (Roberta); two nieces, Norma Alexander and Dorothy Johnson; numerous great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives, business associates and friends.
