Jennie Ruth Burnett, the youngest daughter of five children, was born to Mittie and Robert Butler on July 26, 1927 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Mrs. Burnett received her education in the Atlanta Public Schools and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1946. She married her husband of 62 years, Reverend Otis B. Burnett, Jr., shortly after she graduated. From their union three children were born, Denise, Otis III and Bernard. She was a homemaker who nurtured, cared for and molded the minds of not only her children but a host of children which spanned more than 50 years. Also she was a seamstress and sewed for churches, schools, friends and family. In her free time she traveled to her favorite places and she spearheaded many trips for Bowmen Bus Tours.
She has always been active in the church, with an early beginning of going with her father to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Then after marrying Otis she joined Ebenezer Baptist Church where he was ordained. She became First Lady of Cole Street Baptist Church, Marietta, Georgia, in 1963. After several years at Cole Street, she began her 37 year reign as First Lady of Shady Grove Baptist Church. After retiring Otis and Jennie returned to worship at their horne church Ebenezer Baptist Church.
Being a Daughter, Mother and First Lady of the Church, She was an active member in many aspects, Ebenezer's Young Matrons; Shady Grove's O.B. Burnett Club and the Founder of the J.R.B. Usher Board; she was also a proud member of the July Month Club.
Mrs. Jennie Burnett departed this life on May 22, 2009 at Emory University at Midtown/Crawford Long Hospital. She precedes two of her siblings in death~ Mrs. Leila Mae Ammons and Mr. Robert M. Butler. She leaves to cherish her memory, husband, Reverend Otis B. Burnett, Jr.; two brothers Mr. Frank Butler, Atlanta, Georgia and Mr. James Butler, Cheyenne, Wyoming; sister-in-laws, Sarah Bradley, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Carrie Thomas, Atlanta, Georgia; children, Denise D. Burnett, Otis B. Burnett, III and Bernard A. Burnett; daughter-in-law, Priscilla P. Burnett; grandchildren, Martina Crawford (Antione), Otis B. Burnett, IV (Kim), Wayne T. Brown, Jr. (Tamesha) and Christopher P. Burnett (Damarys); great-grandchildren, Xavier Brown, Niobe Crawford, Braxton Burnett and Bryce Burnett; and a host of nieces, nephews~ family and friends.
Throughout her life she left an unforgettable impression on everyone she touched and will truly be missed.
