Esther, affectiionately called "Duke" by her beloved Pappa Tom, was the apple of her parents eye. She joined the New Bethleham Baptist Church, Princeton, S.C., at an early age, where she attended Sunday School, participated in youth activities, and sang in the Junior Choir. She was joined in holy matrimony to Mr. Artis Beeks in December 1934, and to this union, nine children were born. She was also predeceased by Mr. Beeks and daughter Zenolia and sons Artis Jr. and Tellington "Sonny". Mrs. Beeks joined the Long Branch Baptist Church when she moved to Greenville, S.C. She sang in the Senior Choir and was a member of Mission Circle. She and her children participated in other aspects of the church including Sunday School, youth activities, Training Union, and various choral groups. Additionally, she held many fund raisers for the church and could always be counted on for her delicious Sunday and special dinners during Revival meetings, and her overall splendid hospitality and vibrant personality. Shortly after moving to Atlanta, in January 1961, Mrs. Beeks joined the Turner Monumental A.M. E. Church. Her children attended Sunday School, sang in various choirs and contributed to other activities at Turner. CROSSING THE BAR Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar .1 When I put out to sea. (. But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and form, When that which drew from out the boundless deep, Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell When I embark. For though from out our bourne of Time and Place, The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face, When I have crossed the bar. --Alfred Tennyson Beye transformed by the renewing of your mind.
