The film captures the roadside environs along Marietta Street and other downtown roadways beginning in or near downtown Atlanta, heading northwest towards Kennesaw Mountain, and ending in the Marietta Square. Mr. Horne appears to be following the inner urban streetcar route. There are several billboards for businesses located in downtown Atlanta: Downtown Chevrolet Co., Henry Grady Hotel, Ansley Hotel, and Hotel Hampton.  The route passes beneath several Seaboard Railroad crossings and a large train yard, probably Inman Yards. Also of particular interest in the a streetcar is shown with African-Americans boarding at the rear of the car. During last several minutes of the film is a segment showing an unpaved section of Marietta Street/Road. The car follows the dirt road to a road closed sign and a construction zone. The remaining twenty to thirty seconds of the film captures a portion of the Marietta Square. He formed a group known as \"Hell Drivers\" and in 1934 began touring at fairgrounds and racetracks. Lucky died in 1942 while performing a stunt at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Candler Field, located south of Atlanta, Georgia, opened in 1925 when Mayor Walter Sims signed a lease on 287 acres. The first flight landed on September 15, 1926 from Jacksonville, Florida. Eastern Airlines, \"The Great Silver Fleet,\" began service to Atlanta in 1928. The filmGone With the Wind, based on the novel by Margaret Mitchell (Marsh), premiered in Atlanta, Georgia on December 15, 1939. The principal actors arrived in Atlanta prior to the premiere and toured several historical sites as well as attended a ball hosted by the Atlanta Junior League.","The collection, in its original format, is a single reel of 8mm black and white acetate film. The first four and a half minutes of the film documents a portion of the Lucky Teter performance at Lakewood Speedway. This segment captures some of the automobile and motorcycle stunts as well as a section of the grandstands. The next two minutes contain aerial shots of neighborhoods, Lakewood Fairgounds, and a portion of a train yard. The last minute and a half captures a portion of the Gone With the Wind premiere celebrations. The thirty-two-and-a-half minute film, probably shot for insurance purposes, focuses on the devastation of the commercial and governmental center of Gainesville, but also includes footage of damage to nearby residential areas. In particular, it features the damage to the public square, the county courthouse, the Georgia Power Company, the Cooper Pants Factory, and the First Methodist Church. The 1936 Gainesville tornado (part of a massive tornado outbreak across the Deep South that also heavily damaged Tupelo, Mississippi) is generally regarded as the fifth deadliest in U.S. history. Extensive recovery efforts involving many local, regional, state, and national resources eventually rebuilt Gainesville, culminating in the 1938 dedication of the new city hall and county courthouse by President Franklin Roosevelt. The collection includes over eight hundred pages of the organization's board of directors meeting minutes, which document over sixty years of ATFA history. Prior to the 1960s, pine gum was processed into rosin and turpentine, along with a variety of other by-products, making it vital to the economy of the Southeast, particularly Georgia. At one time, the United States produced 53% of rosin and turpentine worldwide. The turpentine business was a major influence not only on the national economy but the way of life in the South's turpentine belt (Georgia, Alabama, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas).  This industry's slow demise, which began in the 1930s, spurred a group of passionate and dedicated turpentine workers to create a cooperative, the American Turpentine Farmers Association (ATFA), which lobbied for the revival of the gum naval stores industry. These narratives were collected in the 1930s as part of the Federal Writers' Project (FWP) of the Works Progress Administration, later renamed Work Projects Administration (WPA).  At the conclusion of the Slave Narrative project, a set of edited transcripts was assembled and microfilmed in 1941 as the seventeen-volume Slave Narratives: A Folk History of Slavery in the United States from Interviews with Former Slaves. In 2000-2001, with major support from the Citigroup Foundation, the Library digitized the narratives from the microfilm edition and scanned from the originals 500 photographs, including more than 200 that had never been microfilmed or made publicly available.
