Atlanta (CL-51) by official Naval photographers during the Battle of Midway and another unidentified operation. The images consist of aerial views of the Atlanta in formation with unidentified U.S. cruisers and aircraft carriers, as well as a close-up of the deck of the ship and it's crew.","The U.S.S. Atlanta (CL-51) was launched September 6, 1941 and joined the Pacific Fleet shortly thereafter. It was the third launching of a U.S. warship named Atlanta. The first Atlanta was an ironclad ram captured from the Confederates. The second Atlanta was a protected cruiser launched in 1884. CL-51 was commanded by Captain Samuel P. Jenkins and sponsored by Atlanta author, Margaret Mitchell. In 1942 Atlanta and its crew participated in the Battle of Midway, the Battle of the Solomons, and the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. The cruiser was sunk in November, 1942 by Japanese battleships at Guadalcanal. The fourth Atlanta was launched in 1944 and took part in Pacific operations during World War II. Included within the collection are written letters, v-mail, military, and legal documents concerning Hagins’ service in the United States Army during World War II.","William Archer Hagins Sr. was born on August 8, 1888 in Halcyondale, Screven County, Georgia. In his adult life, he joined the United States Regular Army as a medical officer in the Medical Corps. During World War I, he was deployed to France with the American Expeditionary Force as a First Lieutenant. He received a citation for distinguished and exceptional gallantry at the Battle of Soissons on July 18, 1918. During World War II, he continued his military service, where he was promoted to be the Assistant Surgeon of the U.S. Third Army. In late 1943, he was promoted to be the Chief Surgeon of the Southwest Pacific Area under the command of General Douglas MacArthur. In 1945, he was promoted to Brigadier General, where he continued his Pacific Theater service. He participated in the Occupation of Japan, and was returned home as part of Operation Magic Carpet on the U.S. Navy battleship U.S.S. New Jersey (BB-62). Hagins retired from the U.S. Army in 1948 and died in 1980 at 92 years old. He is buried in Bulloch County.","For more information about this collection see the William A. Many of these British air pilots eventually fought in the Battle of Britain. ​​​​Women also worked at Turner Field during the Darr Aero Tech program; those recorded in this collection participated actively during World War II, performing engineering and/or administrative roles. Pilots became students of the​​ Arnold Scheme, designed by US General Henry H. Arnold, Chief of the United States Army Air Forces, and developed to train RAF pilots at airfields in rural areas of Georgia, Florida and Alabama from 1941-1943. Women are seen throughout the collection working as cafeteria staff, dispatchers, parachute packers, inside of group portraits (without roles), and as wives or girlfriends of male air pilots. If married, women are identified by their husband's names.
