Acreage Reports
A MUST for 77
Georgia farmers who have not already reported their 1977 planted acreages to the local county ASCS office are urged to do so as soon as possible. This report of 1977 planted acreage is one of the most important reports producers have made to ASCS.
The new farm law provides target price disaster and loan benefits
for every producer of wheat, feed grains, upland cotton and rice. To be eligible to participate and

tobacco earlier in the year may be under the impression that they do not need to make further certification. Other producers who did not have allotments and were not required to certify any crops may be under the same impression. In both cases, these producers must report their normal crop acreage in order to be eligible for future program benefits.
The new legislation eliminated allotments for wheat, feed grains and cotton. Program benefits will be based on the total normal crop acreage (NCA) established from the actual 1977 planted acreage. Normal crop acreage in Georgia includes corn, barley, sorghum, wheat, cotton, oats, rye and soybeans. Reports are also needed for any other crops planted. NCA reports are taken on a field-by-field basis. All cropland on the farm should be accounted for.
If a drought similar to the one Georgia experienced this past summer occurs in 1979, the benefits a producer could receive on corn are based on the acreage of corn planted within the NCA. The total NCA for the farm cannot be exceeded. If a

Learn To Quilt
At Stone Mtn.
Quilting lessons will be offered during January and February at Stone Mountain Park's Clayton House. Five Monday classes will be taught from January 16 consecutively through February 13. Exceeds Limited Supply

The employment opportunities in ag engineering and engineering technology are "most outstanding at this particular time," according to Dr. Robert H. Brown, Chairman of the agricultural engineering division at the University of Georgia College of Agriculture.
Dr. Brown said the "need for ag engineers in 1977" arises from "several nationwide situations including the energy shortage, environmental quality, increasing federal regulations on agricultural
industry, the need for water in food

production and "the need to assist in producing more food on approximately the same acres."
The "mission" of the agricultural engineer is to "use energy more efficiently" to design versatile and efficient irrigation systems for crops, develop new technology for nutrient management or design quiet, energy-efficient industrial equipment.
Times have never been more exciting in agricultural engineering. "The ag engineer has the opportunity and I believe he'll meet it
to make a greater contribution to food production than when he placed the tractor in the field," Dr. Brown continued. "We're at that

Dear Editor: After accumulating a lot of small pieces of soap,
cut them up so they are very small, put them in a pot
and cover with water and put on a slow burner and stir
until melted. This is poured into a pan about two inches deep and as long and wide as needed to hold melted soap.
It is set aside until cold, then cut into desired size bars. Put bars into open container so they may dry
out. Use as regular soap. Mrs. K. B.

MOW FESCUE
It may be late December but it's no time to forget fescue lawns. Tim Bowyer, Extension Service turf specialist, says there is a tendency, on cold days, to forget the lawn and "let it sort of grow on its own." But Bowyer reminds homeowners that adequate maintenance of fescue lawns involved proper mowing frequency and height. Remove no more than one-third of the foliage at a time, and mow to a height of 2 1/2 to 3 inches.

CANDIED APPLES, HAM AND ROLLS
Wash 4 to 6 apples and cut into 2 or 3 inch quarters, leaving the peel on them. Cut out core and seeds. Arrange in a skillet or saucepan, peel side down, sprinkle with 1 cup or more of sugar. Then sprinkle with a little cinnamon on top and add a cup of water. Cook until they are tender or turn to syrup or better until syrup is almost jellied. Serve with fried ham and hot butter, whole wheat rolls and spoon some of the syrup over the rolls

aluminum foil

crock pot

Wash sweet potatoes, dry and grease with peanut oil.

Wrap sweet potatoes in aluminum foil. Place sweet pota-

toes in crock pot, small ends up and in layers if necessary.

Turn heat switch to high and cook for 3 to 4 hours or until

potatoes are soft. Potatoes may be cooked on low heat

overnight if desired. After cooking is complete, crock pot

will retain heat for hours so potatoes may be served hot if

desired.

Chop one green pepper and one medium onion. Add one large can of salmon. Add one cup of water and simmer until tender. Serve on rice.

STUFFED ONIONS

6 large, mild onions

2 tb. minced parsley

1/2 cup butter or margarine

1/2 tsp. salt

1 cup ripe olives

1/4 tsp. poultry seasoning

1 cup soft breadcrumbs

1/4 tsp. sage

1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese Dash pepper

Paprika

Peel onions, removing thin outer layer only. Slice off

tops of onions, making them as even in height as possible.

Cover with boiling, salted water and simmer for 30

minutes, or until just tender. Drain and cool. Chop onion

tops to make 1/3 cup finely-chopped onion; saute in butter

until golden brown. Chop olives and combine with bread

crumbs, cheese, parsley, salt, pepper, poultry seasoning

and sage. Scoop out center portion of onions (set aside,

chop, and add to creamed peas for another meal, if

desired). Do not cut through bottom of onion "shells". Fill

with olive mixture; sprinkle with paprika. Bake, covered,

in moderate oven for 20 minutes. Uncover and bake 10

minutes longer. Serve piping hot.

1 can flake coconut

2 c. brown sugar, packed

2 pkgs. 8 oz. chopped dates

3 c. rice crispies

2 c. chopped pecans

It. vanilla

powdered sugar to roll balls in

Cream brown sugar and margarine over low heat. Add

coconut, dates and salt.. Once these are mixed start

timing. Cook over low heat for 6 minutes (turn down heat

if needed). Remove from heat, add vanilla, nuts and

krispies. When mixture is cool enough to handle roll bits

at a time into balls. Roll balls as you make them in

powdered sugar spread on wax paper until cool.

Carnations have been worldwide favorites for centuries. Their formal name Dianthus is a contraction of "Dios anthos", or flower of God.
The original carnations were known to the ancient Greeks as karyophyllon meaning they had leaves shaped like the keel of a boat. In England, they were known as the "gillyflower" believed to have been shipped over to England with a load of masonry for the castle of William the Conqueror.
They are also known as "pinks" which applied to the flower before it applied to the color.
Unfortunately most people think carnations are hothouse flowers limited to corsages, and floral arrangements. Actually they are dependable perennials with a heavenly spicy aroma which is a bonus to any garden.
Carnations bloom the same year they are planted and for many seasons thereafter without further care or attention. They all produce the familiar carnation fragrance which has given rise to one of the family's many names - clove pink. The flowers were at one time favored by Arabians as a seasoning for wine because of their clove smell and taste.
To successfully grow carnations you need lots of sunshine. They prefer well drained soil, slightly on the alkaline side. They favor areas where the summers are cool and winters not too cold.

Possible positions for the graduating ag engineering student include jobs like design engineer, program engineer, production development engineer, Extension safety specialist, tractor maintenance specialist, irrigation representative, mechanization specialist and resource and design engineer.
Starting salaries are usually $14,000 for the BS graduate, $1416,000 for the MS graduate and $1921,000 for the Ph.D., according to Dr. Rex Clark, graduate coordinator for the ag engineering division at the University of Georgia. "The demand is much greater than the supply for both masters and Ph.D.'s," Dr. Clark emphasized. "There is a dire need for young people with a Ph.D in agricultural engineering."
Most graduates "go to work in industry in various areas," Dr. Clark noted. "Many of them design electrical components and machine components or work as engineers in animal and human food processing plants."

Lives By Rules
Christmas cactus is a beautiful plant that will thrive, reproduce and bloom for years to come IF you follow a few rules peculiar to this pi ant.
Although Christmas cactus is a member oi the cactus family, you should not treat it like other cacti. It does not like direct summer sun. If you are growing it in a south or west window, shade it with sheer curtains. A north or east window is fine without the curtains.
As for water, this is not a dry-soil plant that can endure neglect for weeks and weeks. Treat it like a coleus during most of the year and be sure the soil is porous.
To make it bloom, withhold the water in the fall for a month. Resume watering cautiously in November but don't let the stems get flabby. From October on keep the plant where it will be cool at night, around 60 to 65 degrees.
Christmas cactus are very prolific and will fill a container rapidly. To propagate it, cut shoots back from the tips at the second join and stick the cuttings in a moist perlite-peat soil. Water just a little at first or the stems will rot. After two or three weeks, increase water. Pot in a loose soil mixture when well rooted.
University of Georgia may gain practical experience in areas like poultry processing plant operations, soil and water management and farm machinery design by participating in the division's co-op program. Dr. Ed Law, Director of the program, said there are openings for a number of students in the program. The work experience gives the graduating co-op students "first chance at jobs," Dr. Law noted.

Agricultural engineers play a major role in food production by developing better machines to handle farm products. These men are testing a mechan-
