Vet. Medicine
In Georgia
Corn bread is at its best when the pone is broken into pieces - corn muffins, corn sticks and cut slices. Here are a few bits of veterinary medicine -- Let's chew on them together.
Did you know that animal agriculture in Georgia is now run-
ning approximately 2 billion dollars annually. Animal agriculture counts for 53% - 55% of the total agricultural farm income, depending upon
e varying price of feed and other commodities. Exactly where does veterinary medicine fit into this picture? Out of

the 2 billion dollar animal industry in Georgia, there are approximately 200 million dollars lost each year due directly to disease and parasites of animals. If this amount is divided by 5 million citizens of the State, it averages about 40 dollars per person.
When you add the indirect losses such as poor feed conversion, poor weight gains, increased size of facilities to produce a profitable enterprise, interest on this investment, and all the other side costs, another 300 million dollars can be accounted for indirect losses due to animal diseases. When you add these two figures together, the losses average about 100 dollars per person per year for each citizen of the state. Veterinary medicine can make its contribution in reducing this loss.
The backbone of the veterinary profession is the private practitioner. While he receives his education in a public institution, unlike many other medical professionals, when he goes into practice he makes a personal investment of over 100 thousand dollars for hospital facilities alone and begins to develop his practice and serve his community.
None of the facilities are built and maintained at community expense. In addition he pays taxes on

Dixie Farm Show
Coming To Atlanta
The Dixie Farm Show will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, this year, December 1 through 4 at the magnificent World Congress Center.
Promising to be the most inclusive showing of farm and home equipment ever presented in the seven Southeastern states, the state's agribusiness economy should benefit as a result of the show.
Exhibits are planned to include everything new in solar energy for farming as well as innovations in grain drying, harvesting equipment, irrigation and home gardening.
Tour groups are being formed from Georgia, Alabama,

Insurance Pays

Tobacco Farmers

The first Chairman of the U.S. Savings Bond committee, Tommy Irvin, Commissioner of Agriculture, watches as Governor Busbee signs an executive order establishing the first Interagency Committee for the purchase of U.S. Savings Bonds. The purpose of the Committee is to encourage State Government employees to purchase Savings Bonds through the payroll savings plan.

For Fire Losses
Seventeen tobacco farmers who lost their tobacco in the fire at Big Planters Warehouse in Metter last August received payment in full for their losses this past week.
In addition to the $61,442 paid to farmers, warehousemen received $231,775 for their losses in the August 19 fire that destroyed all the tobacco there as well as the facility.
One additional claim in the amount of $2,000 is yet to be paid but settlement is expected soon.
State law requires all Georgia tobacco warehouses to be fully insured to protect farmers from loss before the warehouses can be licensed to hold sales.

Title Requirement
Dropped By SBA
The Small Business Administration has dropped the requirement for farmers to obtain a title opinion from their private attorneys before disbursement of SBA Drought Disaster loans.
According to SBA Regional Director, Wiley S. Messick, this change should expedite disbursement to a typical SBA loan by one to four weeks, based on the responses to the earlier requirement for title opinions, "We cannot over emphasize the significance of this change", said Messick. "It was made in response to our urgent request."
The SBA loan production figures in Georgia at the close of business Wednesday, November 2, were:
Accepted 8,561 for $745,015,900 Approved 2,288 for $108,546,500 Disbursed 366 for $ 8,250,000
"Until the daily disbursements match or exceed daily loan approval rates, disbursements will have first priority in the disaster operations", according to the Regional Director.
Farmer's Dilemma
Prompts Protest
During the past harvest season, the FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN has published several articles describing the serious plight of Georgia farmers this year, due primarily to drought and insect damages.
Two weeks ago Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin expressed his concern about the holdup of loan payments to deserving farmers by the Small Business Administration.
Last week, figures showing that only 222 farmers had received any funds from the SBA while 16,000 had been interviewed and more than 8,000 had made formal applications for loans were published.
Thousands of farmers throughout the state are in a terrible dilemma as they have outstanding debts incurred to plant their crops and then were able to harvest and sell nothing.
As a result of being misled, misunderstood and tied by red tape, farmers in many areas of the state have been holding public protests which Commissioner Irvin supports.

Dear Editor: I was wondering if someone out there knew what to
do with small pieces of soap as far as melting them down and shaping them into guest-type bars for company.
Please see if anything needs to be added to the soap to make it lather or hold together once it has cooled off.
Ms. Jerri Rowe 320 W. Church St., No. 4 Americus, Ga. 31709
Dear Editor: In the quilting department I think I have a record. I
would like to hear from anyone who has done more than I. As of October 19th, I have nearly finished my 12th quilt this year. All have been queen size except two, one was a king and one was double. All have been cross-stitch jobs, pre-stamped for my quilting except two double wedding rings, one flower garden, one log cabin and the double bed size was patch work. I made the log cabin and both wedding rings from start to finish.
I have been making quilts for sale and doing quilts for others for seven years. Last year I did 26 [including 5 queen size, 2 king size]. The year before I did 23 and the year before that I did 24. I didn't keep a record before that.
I have quilts from Miami to Texas and my advertisement has been mostly by word of mouth, however, I have had two or three ads in the BULLETIN.
Besides my quilting I do all my housework including a biq noon meal almost every day, my freezing, canning, pickling and jelly making. This year I picked 52
gallon strawberries; last year I picked 48 gallons. I am church historian, President of Women of the Church and teach a Sunday School class.
I make a lot of people happy with my quilting and that makes me happy. I don't mean for my letter to sound boastful. I am just stating facts and I would like to hear from anyone who has done more quilting than me, just to satisfy my mind.

Horses, mules, ponies
for sale
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdic tion over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publi cation.
All horses offered for advertise ment through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the p ast 60 days.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Con sumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

Acres and acres of Georgia cropland are devoted to growing sweet potatoes. At one time 150,000 acres were planted but the number has decreased to about 10,000 acres in recent years. Yield per acre averages about 160bushels. Last year's crop produced almost seven million dollars in agricultural revenue.
Sweet potatoes are members of the morning glory family. They are native to our country and were under cultivation when the first settlers arrived. Georgia's sandy loam soil and long growing season supply the perfect growing conditions for sweet potatoes. Our leading varieties include the Red and Yellow Jewel and the Georgia Red. While sweet potatoes are grown throughout the state, the major commercial producers are located in South Georgia.
Sweet potato harvesting begins in mid-summer but reaches its peak in the fall. For six to eight weeks in October and November, sweet potato fields are a flurry of activity with sweet potato diggers running from sunrise to sunset. Although the diggers "unearth" the potatoes, hand labor is still required to handle and pack the sweet potatoes before the first frost.
"Sleds" of sweet potatoes are transported to the curing house for packing and shipping throughout the United States. Careful handling allows Georgia sweet potatoes to be marked throughout the year rather than just one season.
The sweet potatoes at your market are fresh and nutritious. They are an excellent source of vitamin A and can be prepared in many interesting ways from souffles to pies.

Hewtf'j A Buafot'?
Hearts-a-bustin' is a beautiful shrub averaging from five to ten feet tall. In the fall it is spectacular when the pods burst open to reveal bright red seeds.
Hearts-a-bustin' or Euonymus americanus is commonly known by many colloquial names including "puppy toes", "strawberry bush", "swamp dogwood" and "wahoo".
The plant is native to the southeastern United States and is found growing in woodlands and usually along streams. The leaves are egg shaped but pointed at the base and tip.
Although the plant does bear small white flowers in the spring, they are .^latively inconspicuous and it is the fall roior of the bright red seed pods which i^s made it a favorite native plant.
Improving Catfish
For Better Eating
If you order catfish in a restaurant you will probably get a pond-grown Channel cat. Although these Channel cats may have come from hatcheries as fingerlings for pond rearing, they are a wild fish specie, native to rivers and streams.
Researchers in the Department of Entomology and Fisheries at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station have been trying to improve the characteristics of catfish through selective breeding.
According to researcher Tom Hill, "We are trying to develop a strain of catfish that will be much improved over the wild fish that the farmers use today. We want a fish that will grow to a more harvestable size one that will grow better on less feed in a shorter time. We want one that will dress out better at the processor."
Thus far experiments have resulted in a 20 percent improvement in body weight in the selected strain as compared to the unselected one. Such an increase in weight also means an economic increase to the producer.
Scientists estimate three to five years more research is required before the first hybrid strain of Channel cats is developed for commercial production.
Packaging Costs
Foods packed as individual servings are usually not good buys, say Extension Service home economists, because the extra packaging in most cases boosts the price.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Readers Remember Cottolene

The response to our Letters to the Editor note in the October 26 BULLETIN concerning Cottolene was overwhelming, we want to share some of the information with you.

Cottolene, made from cotton seeds and beef suet is a compound lard used for shortening back in the early 1900's. This lard lost its popularity
as people discontinued using
wood stoves. It seems when food containing cottolene was cooked in the newer stoves, the cotton seed taste became very obvious.

Mealy Bugs Cause Houseplant Death

The white powdery substance on

your houseplants does not represent

a variegated innovation in hort-

iculture it means you have mealy

bugs that are going to kill your

violets, cactus and foliage plants.

Mealy bugs feed on soft and

woody plants but do their worst

damage on plants

with soft, fleshy

stems such as col-

eus, african vio-

lets and tropical

houseplants. They

are minute in-

sects, scarcely

/ yfjij^y

visible to the

naked eye. When

you see a white

powdery coating on houseplants, it

means that thousands of mealy bugs

are sucking the life out of your plan-

ts.

Mealy bugs are soft bodied and

very susceptible to treatment. Good

systemic insecticides include Or-

thene, Metasystox and Cygon. Also

Malathion and Diazinon are ef-

fective. Two applications two weeks

apart according to label directions

are recommended.

If you don't have these in-

secticides handy, soak a cotton

swab in rubbing alcohol and wipe

along infected stem. If you have only a few mealy bugs, this will eliminate

the problem.

R. F. McDaniel, East Point
Company were two known producers of Cottolene. The Proctor & Gamble plant which was located on Milton Avenue in Atl&nta burned down in 1932. Mr. G. H. Chambers of Stone Mountain told us that Swift
& Company manufactured a brand called, "Silverleaf Cottolene."
The N. K. Fairbanks Company also produced cottolene and in 1910, published a cookbook called "Home Helps." Another cookbook con-
taining Cottolene recipes is, "Fiftytwo Sunday Dinners."
Cottolene was advertised as the "amazing substance that shortens food and lengthens life." On the N. K. Fairbanks pail, the lid read
"Cottolene, contains NO Hog Fat, Use 1/3 Less."
Mrs. Henry Evans. Cedartown, Mr. R. F. McDaniel, East Point, and Mrs. Paul Franklin, Jr., Cartersville, all remembered the Cottolene bucket and sent us illustrations like the one
shown. A favorite saying around the
railroad yard in the 1900's was, "If you can't do yer job and do it right, jest git yer cottolene bucket and go home!" And who knows how many
lunches were shared under the trees
from cottolene buckets. Mrs. Schulz from Macon has a
cookbook belonging to her grandmother and it said cottolene was "nature's gift from the sunny South." Mr. E. B. Lightfoot of Decatur kindly shared with the BULLETIN, a cottolene recipe for
Liberty Apple Pie. Thanks to all the lovely people
who shared their memories with us.

On Bulk Coal
The sale of bulk coal will come under tight controls of the Weights and Measures Section of the Georgia Department of Agriculture this winter.
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said coal sold by the bag in "chunk" form will be required to carry a label specifying the exact weight of the bag.
The Commissioner said under new regulations, bagged, chunk coal can only be sold in 40, 60, 80 and 100 pound weights. He said the weight must be displayed in at least twoinch letters on the outside of the bag or on an attached tag.
He added the enforcement of proper weight sales for the much used commodity in Georgia will provide a new area of consumer protection from the Agriculture Department. He said the sale of bagged, chunk coal in Georgia is in the annual range of a quarter of a million dollars.
