- This collection consists of a letter from John Tyler, Jr. to Lucius J. Gartrell in 1861 explaining the reluctance of the Confederate government to supercede state's rights.
John Tyler, Jr. (1819-1896) was the son of the the tenth President of the United States, John Tyler. He was a colonel and lawyer during the Civil War and also served as assisstant Secretary of War.
Lucious J. Gartrell (1821-1891) represented Georgia in the United States Congress and the Confederate Congress and was the colonel commanding officer in the 7th Georgia Infantry. He was promoted to Brigadier General in 1864. After the war he practiced law in Atlanta.
