Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission
In September 2006, the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor was designated by Congress to recognize the important contributions made to American culture by enslaved Africans who were brought to this country to work in the rice plantations that once existed in the barrier islands and coastal regions of North and South Carolina, Florida and Georgia. Because of their geographic isolation and strong sense of community, the Gullah/Geechee people developed a creole language and preserved many elements of their African roots that remain intact today. The Heritage Corridor will enhance the preservation and interpretation of the language, arts and crafts, folklore, religious beliefs and foods that are significant to Gullah/Geechee culture.
The legislation creates a Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission to develop a management plan for the heritage area. The commission will consist of 15 members, including six from South Carolina and three each from Florida, North Carolina and Georgia. Two individuals will be nominated by the state historic preservation offices in these states and one will be appointed by the Secretary of the Interior. To receive consideration for the management commission, biographies or resumes must be received by March 30, 2007. The Fact Sheet and National Park Service News Release is available on HPD's website at http://hpd.dnr.state.ga.us/content/displaycontent.asp?txtDocument=358 with detailed information on the application process.

Women's History sites funded through Georgia Heritage Grants
Georgia Heritage Grant funds have been awarded to help preserve resources associated with prominent women throughout the state. Since the grant program began, properties associated with writers, educators, women's groups, a singer,
and an artist have received financial assistance totaling over $95,000. Notable women's sites that benefited from Georgia Heritage Grants include Flannery O'Connor's Andalusia in Baldwin County, the Beulah Rucker House in Hall County, the Mary Hambidge House in Rabun County, the "Ma" Rainey Pridgett House in Muscogee County, the Cora Harris Study and Chapel in Bartow County, the Lyons Woman's Club in Toombs County, and the Dawson Women's Clubhouse in Terrell County. We will highlight these resources throughout March in recognition of Women's History Month.
More money could be available to save historic resources like these by increasing funding allotted to the Georgia Heritage Grant Program. You can help us achieve this goal by ordering a Historic Preservation License Plate. Twentytwo dollars of the tag fee is designated for the Georgia Heritage Grant Program. For more information, contact grants coordinator Carole Moore at 404: 463-8434 or e-mail at carole_moore@dnr.state.ga.us. To view the plate and/or use the order form to reserve the plate, go to HPD's Web site at www.gashpo.org.
1000 tags must be ordered by December 2007 before these tags will be manufactured. Current tag orders are 494.
