December 2007 Reflections newsletter now available online
The December 2007 issue of Reflections, the quarterly publication of the Georgia African American Historic Preservation Network is now available on HPD's website at http://hpd.dnr.state.ga.us/content/displaycontent.asp?txtDocument=259. This issue features the Southern Rural Black Women's Initiative, a tri-state collaborative that spans 77 counties in Alabama, Georgia and the Mississippi Delta. SRBWI hosted a Share Your Heritage workshop in Albany and implemented the Black Women's Hall of Fame project. The Hall of Fame recognizes extraordinary accomplishments of women in the three states in areas such as the Civil Rights Movement, education and community service. The 2007 induction ceremony was held at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham and Georgia will honor their inductees in Albany. Another article features the Old Stone Church in DeKalb County that once was a black Baptist congregation, and efforts to recognize its African American past by the First Existentialist Congregation of Atlanta. Save the Date for an upcoming February symposium in Savannah that will discuss recent scholarship on African American life in the Georgia Low Country.

Reminder - Georgia's 2007-2011 State Historic Preservation Plan is now online
Under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, each State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) is charged with developing, and revising as needed, a statewide historic preservation plan. Georgia's State Historic Preservation Plan 2007-2011: Building a Preservation Ethic was completed in 2007 and is now available on our website at http://hpd.dnr.state.ga.us/content/displaycontent.asp?txtDocument=408. This plan will guide our work through 2011, and provides common direction for all organizations and individuals who support the preservation of Georgia's historic places.
The Plan includes information about trends in Georgia and how they may affect historic properties; mission, vision and goals for historic preservation; information about Georgia's historic and archaeological resources, information about how preservation works in Georgia, and about the statewide preservation planning process. We encourage you to take a look at the Plan and assist us in the mission of promoting the preservation and use of historic places for a better Georgia.
