HPD receives Preserve America grant for cemetery preservation initiative!
The Historic Preservation Division (HPD) of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources received an $86,000 Preserve America grant to help preserve Georgia's historic cemeteries. Dr. Ray Luce, HPD's director and deputy state historic preservation officer, accepted the award from First Lady Laura Bush during a recent ceremony on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C.
Cemetery preservation is a high priority for Georgia's citizens. Dr. Luce explains, "A few years ago, while holding public input meetings for our state plan, cemeteries were the top historic resource people wanted preserved. Since that time, our archaeology unit coordinator, Christine (Van Voorhies) Neal produced "Grave Intentions: A Comprehensive Guide to Cemetery Preservation in Georgia" with the Historic Chattahoochee Commission. It is our hope that with this grant, we can assist communities with the next step of finding ways to interpret cemeteries for both local citizens and heritage tourists."
Grant funds will promote the recognition, preservation, documentation, and protection of Georgia's historic cemeteries throughout the State. Funds will be used to conduct a statewide conference focusing on the preservation of the cemeteries and their use in heritage tourism; to produce a publication that gives an overview of preservation guidelines and interpretation of historic cemeteries; to promote the importance of historic cemeteries through public information; to create a cemetery sub-grant program where Preserve America communities apply for activities, such as cemetery preservation planning, interpretive plans, National Register nominations, etc. Contact Karen Anderson-Cordova at karen_anderson-cordova@dnr.state.ga.us for more information
Mrs. Bush congratulated the first 45 recipients of Preserve America Grants. The first round of Preserve America grants provided $3.5 million for projects in 28 states representing all regions of the country. The Georgia cities of Roswell and
Augusta-Richmond County also received grants on March 9. The First Lady also announced an application deadline of May 19 for the second round of grant funding totaling $1.5 million.
Preserve America is a White House initiative that encourages and supports community efforts to preserve and enjoy our priceless cultural and natural heritage. More information on Preserve America, including a complete list of grant recipients, criteria and application forms for various initiative programs, can be found at www.PreserveAmerica.gov.

National Register news
The United States Post Office, Federal Annex at 77 Forsyth Street in downtown Atlanta was listed in the National Register on February 10, 2006.
Designed by Atlanta architect Albert Ten Eyck Brown and constructed in Atlanta's central business district between 1931 to 1933. This ten-story 292,000 square foot reinforced concrete structure is a product of the Public Works Administration (PWA) and built to serve the growing postal needs of the city in the early 1930s. It served as the central postal facility for the entire southeast region of the United States. The location of the building, opposite Terminal Station (across Spring Street at the time), was a strategic choice and significant in making the broader handling and distribution of mail possible by way of railroad. Tunnels under the Spring and Mitchell viaducts connected the mail handling areas of the Post Office with the mailing platforms of the adjacent Terminal Station (later demolished in 1970.) Mail was transferred back and forth by ways of conveyor belts that ran through tunnels.
The United States Post Office, Federal Annex is an excellent example of the Modern Classic style of architecture of the Modern Movement. It is considered one of Atlanta's finest examples of Federal architecture built in the late 1920s and early 1930 "a landmark of the city's Deco-to Modern Era and one of the region's most significant public works in the Modern Classic style."
A product of the PWA under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, this building exemplifies the modern bureaucratic Federal architecture of the thirties. This Modern Classic style, as it is sometimes referred to, was a widely popular style of government-sponsored buildings constructed during the thirties. This style is typically characterized by smooth planar wall surfaces, low relief detailing and minimal ornament in simplified classical forms.
