Vote today for your favorite historic preservation license plate design!
The link to vote for your favorite preservation license plate design is up and running again at www.gashpo.org! The site will be available for voting through March 12. After the final design is selected and 1,000 orders have been placed, the tag will become available. You can go to your county tag office now and reserve your plate for just $25. Proceeds from the sale of the preservation license plate will benefit HPD's Georgia Heritage grant program, which was initiated in 1994 by the Georgia General Assembly. The program provides funding for predevelopment and development ("bricks and mortar') projects for historic properties throughout the state. In recent years, requests for grant funding have averaged over $1 million, with an average of $129,000 actually available. A successful license plate campaign ultimately will mean more money for important preservation projects in your city or county! For more information about the license plate initiative or the Georgia Heritage grant program, please contact Carole Moore, grants coordinator at 404-463-8434 or carole_moore@dnr.state.ga.us

2006 General Assembly Update #2:
The following legislation of interest to preservationists has been introduced. Contact Glen Bennett at the Georgia Trust for additional information, 404-8857804; gbennett@georgiatrust.org. The full text of these bills can be found at http://www.legis.state.ga.us/legis/2005_06/leg/legislation.htm.
Land Conservation Tax Credit (HB 1107): Provides for a tax credit for the value of real property or conservation easements donated to eligible governmental and

nonprofit entities for conservation purposes. The credit cannot be greater than $500,000 or 25 % of the fair market value. While the bill is primarily designed to protect undeveloped greenspace, conservation purposes include the protection of archaeological and historic sites.
Georgia Arts Trust (HB 1086): Provides for a tax credit up to $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for corporations to encourage contributions to arts organizations, including those that support cultural heritage tourism. Creates a Board of Trustees and an advisory committee to manage the funds as endowments for Georgia arts and tourism organizations, provide grants and promote arts and crafts.
War of 1812 Commission (HB 988): Establishes a Bicentennial Commission to enhance educational programs, encourage heritage tourism and develop commemorative programs and activities. It also calls for surveys and informational material about historic structures, archaeological sites, shipwrecks, trails and other places of interest associated with the War of 1812.
Rural Georgia Economic Development Act (SB 414): Authorizes all county governments to establish independent community improvement districts to encourage the development of housing and other larger development projects.
Eminent Domain: Several pieces of legislation are pending that limit how and when governments can condemn land. Eminent domain powers have been used both to demolish historic buildings that are in disrepair and to protect historic properties. Preservationists are urging that any legislation that passes provides use of historic preservation tools, economic incentives and public participation to achieve community revitalization and preserve community character.
Georgia Civil War Commission (SB 445): Transfers the administrative assignment for the Commission from the Department of Natural Resources to the Department of Economic Development.
