POLK COUNTY CONSERVATION RANGER CPL. RICKY DEMPSEY SELECTED TO RECEIVE AWARD
SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. (December 14, 2001) - Cpl. Ricky Dempsey recently was selected as the State Wildlife Law Enforcement Officer of the Year by the Georgia Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), announces the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division (WRD). The selection of Dempsey, a WRD Conservation Ranger in Polk County in Northwest Georgia, for the state award also makes him eligible for the national award.
"Cpl. Dempsey shows exceptional persistence and dedication to protecting the wild turkey population of Polk County," says WRD Chief of Law Enforcement Col. Ron Bailey. "He uses both his outstanding enforcement skills and education efforts to help protect wild turkeys and their habitat."
Cpl. Dempsey patrolled Polk and surrounding counties for more than 224 work hours, the majority on foot patrol, in search of wild turkey violations. During this period, he arrested 21 people for various violations related to wild turkeys and also was involved in the location and documentation of 26 illegal baited sites. Dempsey used the local media to educate the public and promote ethical wild turkey hunting and the conservation of habitat resources. He met with local landowners, farmers and hunting clubs to discuss beneficial plantings for wild turkeys and conducted over 25 hours of information and education programs. He has been heavily involved with the NWTF, including helping organize a JAKES Day event at John Tanner State Park in Carroll County. He also helped form the Cedar Valley Strutters Chapter of the NWTF and has served as a committee member of the Little Tallapoos
WRD Regional Law Enforcement Offices each submitted a nominee for statewide consideration for the award. The other nominees included, Ranger Josh Chambers of Region II, Ranger Chad Swain of Region IV, Cpl. David Ruddell of Region V, RFC Richard Burnette of Region VI and Sgt. Gordon Campbell of Region VII.
