Georgia's initial unemployment insurance claims rise in April

ATLANTA The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that 33,784 laid-off workers filed first-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits in April, up 8.2 percent from March. Initial claims were down from 35,130 filed in April 2006 for an over-the-year decrease of 3.8 percent.

The increase in claims in April was mostly due to layoffs in manufacturing and at some financial institutions. Initial claims are considered to be a leading economic indicator, because they measure newly laid-off workers.

The 14 metro areas of the state and the changes in their initial claims from March to April are as
follows:
Albany, up 81, or 13.9 percent, from 583 to 664. Athens, up 70, or 13.3 percent, from 527 to 597. Atlanta, up 1,453, or 11.2 percent, from 12,927 to 14,380.
