Georgia's initial unemployment insurance claims drop in February

ATLANTA The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that 29,738 laid-off workers filed first-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits in February, down 52 percent from January. Initial claims were also down from 29,854 filed in February 2006 for an over-the-year decrease of four-tenths of one percent.

The decrease in claims came across-the-board in manufacturing, construction, trade and services, mostly due to seasonal factors. Initial claims are considered to be a leading economic indicator, because they measure newly laid-off workers.

The 14 metro areas of the state and the decreases in their initial claims from January to February
are as follows:
Albany, down 777, or 59 percent, from 1,312 to 535. Athens, down 438, or 52 percent, from 848 to 410. Atlanta, down 8,121, or 39 percent, from 20,712 to 12,591. Augusta, down 776, or 44 percent, from 1,777 to 1,001. Brunswick, down 80, or 23 percent, from 344 to 264. Columbus, down 1,118, or 64 percent, from 1,739 to 621. Dalton, down 2,324, or 63 percent, from 3,697 to 1,373. Gainesville, down 554, or 51 percent, from 1,081 to 527. Hinesville, down 96, or 37 percent, from 257 to 161.
