ILLINOIS TEAM CAPTURES NWBA TITLE AT ROOSEVELT WARM SPRINGS
WARM SPRINGS Led by the 31 points of Carlee Hoffman, the University of Illinois Fighting Illini defeated the Phoenix Banner Mercury 53-36 Saturday in the finals of the 2007 NWBA National Women's Wheelchair Basketball Tournament at the Georgia Department of Labor's Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation (RWSIR).
The eight-team tournament, which was held Thursday through Saturday at the Frank C. Ruzycki Center for Therapeutic Recreation (RCTR), was dominated by the Illinois team, which captured its second straight NWBA title and fifth in the last six years by going undefeated through five games with an average winning margin of 17.8 points per game.
Along with the runner-up Phoenix squad, the University of Alabama took third, the University of Arizona fourth, the Chicago Ric Sky fifth, Dallas Lady Mavericks sixth, New Jersey Spinal Liberty seventh and Steel City Starz (Pittsburgh) eighth.
It was the second time in the last five years that the NWBA National Women's Wheelchair Basketball Tournament has been held at Roosevelt Warm Springs, a vocational and medical rehabilitation center originally founded by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1927 as a polio treatment center. In addition to the national tournament, Roosevelt Warm Springs has hosted numerous international wheelchair basketball competitions for both men and women since the RCTR was opened in 1996.
