State Labor Department to help workers who lost jobs because of storm

ATLANTA State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond announced today that the Georgia Department of Labor will open a disaster relief unemployment insurance claims center in Americus at the Griffin Bell Aerospace Technology Center on the South Georgia Technical College campus.

In announcing the opening, Commissioner Thurmond said, "According to our local staff, hundreds of Sumter County workers have lost their jobs as a result of the storm. Individuals who have lost their jobs as a result of last week's deadly storms should apply for unemployment compensation at our disaster relief center. I want them to know that the Georgia Department of Labor and South Georgia Tech are working together to help them get through these extraordinarily difficult times."

The center will begin taking claims for unemployment insurance compensation and providing other employment-related services on Monday, March 5 at noon and remain open until 6:00 pm. Following Monday's opening, the center will be open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm until further notice. Individuals who have been laid off due to the effects of the March 1-2 storm may apply.

Affected employees in the heavily-hit Americus and Southwest Georgia area may call the Georgia Department of Labor's toll-free customer service line at (877) 709-8185. They may also call the Americus Career Center at (229) 931-2520 for additional information about these services.

Sumter County workers who lost their jobs may qualify for federal Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) to compensate for loss of income directly resulting from the storms. DUA is a federal program established to help workers whose primary income is lost or interrupted as a direct result of a disaster declared by the President. Federal DUA differs from state unemployment insurance in that it also provides benefits to self-employed business people, such as farmers, diversified farming operations, loggers, commission-paid employees and others who are not eligible for Georgia's regular unemployment insurance program.
