Commissioner Thurmond says labor department prepared to serve workers hit hard by tornadoes
ATLANTA State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that the Georgia Department of Labor is prepared to provide unemployment insurance and employment-related services in Georgia counties hit by destructive tornados on March 1-2. Those counties include Baker, Clay, McDuffie, Stewart, Sumter, and Taylor counties. Other counties may be added as damage is assessed.
Commissioner Thurmond said, "Labor department personnel are being dispatched to areas where the destruction of businesses has resulted in layoffs. This will ensure that access to unemployment compensation and employment-related services will continue to be provided without interruption."
Effected employees in the heavily-hit Americus and Southwest Georgia area may call the Georgia Department of Labor's toll-free customer service line at (877) 709-8185. They may also call their area Career Center for additional information about these services: Albany (229) 430-5010; Americus (229) 931-2520; Camilla (229) 522-3630; Columbus (706) 649-7423; and Thomson (706) 595-3665.
Commissioner Thurmond is working with the Georgia Congressional delegation and other state and federal officials to encourage President Bush to declare the six Georgia counties federal disaster areas, making them eligible for individual federal assistance, including disaster unemployment payments. Under this scenario, disaster-related unemployment insurance claims will not be charged against employers whose businesses were damaged or destroyed.
If those counties are declared a federal disaster area, effected employees may qualify for federal Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) to compensate for loss of income directly resulting from the storms. DUA is a federal program established to help workers whose primary income is lost or interrupted as a direct result of a disaster declared by the President. Federal DUA differs from state unemployment insurance in that it also provides benefits to self-employed business people, such as farmers, diversified farming operations, loggers, commission-paid employees and others who are not eligible for Georgia's regular unemployment insurance program.
