GDOL'S RWSIR to host national women's wheelchair basketball tourney
WARM SPRINGS Wheelchair basketball returns to the Georgia Department of Labor's Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation (RWSIR) March 1-4, as eight of the top women's teams from throughout the country will compete in the 33rd annual National Women's Wheelchair Basketball Tournament at the Frank C. Ruzycki Center for Therapeutic Recreation.
Sponsored by the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA), the four-day event will be the second national women's competition ever held at Roosevelt Warm Springs, a place that has hosted numerous international men's and women's wheelchair competitions over the last 10 years, including the Roosevelt International Cup and the Roosevelt World Wheelchair Basketball Challenge.
Teams representing the University of Alabama; University of Illinois; University of Arizona; Dallas, Texas; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Phoenix, Arizona; Chicago, Illinois; and New Jersey will comprise the field, all hoping to reach the championship game on Sunday, Mar. 4.
"We are excited to again be the host for world-class wheelchair basketball," RWSIR Executive Director Greg Schmieg said. "The young athletes who will visit our campus next month are inspirations for all of us."
The last time the NWBA held its national women's tournament in Warm Springs was 2003 and the University of Illinois emerged as the champion, defeating a team from Los Angeles, California, in the finals, 47-40. After relinquishing the title in 2005, that same University of Illinois quintet regained the crown in Birmingham, Alabama, a year ago and will arrive in Warm Springs as the obvious pre-tournament favorite, having captured four of the last five titles.
There will be no admission charge for the tournament and the public is cordially invited. For more information, call 706-655-5715. The complete schedule follows:
