Georgia's initial unemployment insurance claims jump in January
ATLANTA The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that 62,002 laid-off workers filed first-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits in January, up 53 percent from December. Initial claims were also up from 53,680 filed in January 2006 for an over-the-year increase of 15.5 percent.
The increase in claims is primarily the result of a slowing of the housing market, which led to layoffs in related manufacturing industries, such as carpet and wood products. There were also the normal seasonal layoffs in retail trade and business services. Initial claims are considered to be a leading economic indicator, because they measure newly laid-off workers.
The 14 metro areas of the state and the increases in their initial claims from December to January
are as follows:
Albany, up 492, or 60 percent, from 820 to 1,312. Athens, up 185, or 28 percent, from 663 to 848. Atlanta, up 5,942, or 40 percent, from 14,770 to 20,712. Augusta, up 225, or 15 percent, from 1,552 to 1,777. Brunswick, up 60, or 21 percent, from 284 to 344. Columbus, up 633, or 57 percent, from 1,106 to 1,739. Dalton, up 1,603, or 77 percent, from 2,094 to 3,697. Gainesville, up 611, or 130 percent, from 470 to 1,081. Hinesville, up 101, or 65 percent, from 156 to 257.
