Labor department will help laid-off workers at Collins & Aikman Corporation in Americus
ATLANTA State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that the Georgia Department of Labor will provide assistance to employees who lose their jobs with Collins & Aikman Corporation in Americus. The company manufactures automotive components.
Officials of Collins & Aikman have notified the state labor department that they plan to close their plant, located at 100 Brady Road in Americus, on or by Jan. 31, 2007. About 350 employees are expected to be affected.
"I want workers at Collins & Aikman who will be affected by this plant closure to know that they're not alone in dealing with the problem," Commissioner Thurmond said. "We're prepared to assist them."
Thurmond said the labor department's rapid response unit will meet with company management Thursday to discuss a wide range of services available to any workers who may be laid off. These options include: on-site employee information sessions, unemployment compensation, job-search services, retraining options, resources of the labor department's career centers, surveys of workers to determine needs, special workshops on career options and resume writing and interviewing skills. The Middle Flint Regional Development Center (RDC) will partner with the labor department in providing services.
The Georgia Department of Labor conducts job search workshops, career counseling, and provides resource centers in each office. Some job seekers may also be eligible for occupational/skills training, on-the-job training, General Education Development (GED) preparation and testing, and supportive services such as child-care assistance, transportation assistance and meals while enrolled in full-time training.
