Georgia's initial unemployment insurance claims drop in December
ATLANTA The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that 40,412 laid-off workers filed first-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits in December, down 15 percent from November. Initial claims were also down from 44,222 filed in December 2005 for an over-theyear decrease of 8.6 percent.
Most of the decrease in claims over the month and year is because of seasonal fluctuations in the manufacturing and service industries. Initial claims are considered to be a leading economic indicator, because they measure newly laid-off workers.
The 14 metro areas of the state and the changes in their initial claims from November to
December are as follows:
Albany, down 35, or 4.1 percent, from 855 to 820. Athens, up 66, or 11 percent, from 597 to 663. Atlanta, down 1,920, or 12 percent, from 16,690 to 14,770. Augusta, down 10, or six-tenths of one percent, from 1,562 to 1,552. Brunswick, down 83, or 23 percent, from 367 to 284. Columbus, up 18, or 1.7 percent, from 1,088 to 1,106. Dalton, down 800, or 28 percent, from 2,894 to 2,094. Gainesville, down 27, or 5.4 percent, from 497 to 470. Hinesville, down 27, or 15 percent, from 183 to 156.
