Athens area veterans' job fair scheduled
ATHENS State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that the Georgia Department of Labor's Athens Career Center and several other local organizations will sponsor a job fair next week for veterans and other job seekers in the area.
Commissioner Thurmond said, "I strongly urge Athens area employers to give returning veterans full consideration as they seek to fill vacancies or upgrade their workforce. During their service to our country, these brave men and women have learned valuable job skills that can be easily adapted to jobs in the civilian workplace. And, this job fair will provide an excellent opportunity for employers to come together with Athens area job seekers who have military experience."
The job fair will be held Wednesday, August 16, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at VFW Post 2872 at 835 Sunset Dr. in Athens. In addition to the labor department and the VFW, the Athens-Clarke County Veterans Council and the Ladies Auxiliary will also sponsor the job fair.
The event is expected to feature about 50 employers. Representatives from area businesses will be on hand to interview job applicants and discuss possible employment opportunities with their companies. Applicants should bring information on their work history, current resumes, and dress appropriately.
Employers expected to participate include: Athens-Clarke County Police Department, Advantage Behavioral Health Services, Arby's, Athens Tech, Blanchard Personnel, Blue Ridge Paper Company, Caterpillar, Etcon, Flexstaff Services, Foley Products, Forsyth County Sheriff's Office, Foundry Park Inn, Georgia Department of Veteran Services, Georgia Department of Transportation, Georgia National Guard, Gold Kist, Goodwill Industries, Haband, Hillcrest Foods, Hilton Garden Inn, Holiday Inn, Home Instead Senior Service, J. M. Huber Engineered Woods, JDK Resources, Labor Finders, Lee Arrendale State Prison, Louisiana Pacific, Lowe's, Magnolia Estates, Manpower, Primerica Financial Services, Randstad, Regis, Ritz Carlton, Southern Home Care, Spherion Staffing, St. Mary's Hospital, T. J. Maxx, The Pantry, Top Notch Personnel, U. S. Army, University of Georgia Human Resources, Unified Athens-Clarke Government, Waffle House, and the Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center in Augusta.
