Georgia's unemployment rate declines slightly in July

ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Labor reported today that the state's unemployment rate declined to 5.1 percent in July, down one-tenth of one percent from 5.2 percent in June. However, for the third consecutive month, the Georgia jobless rate was higher than the U. S. rate, which was an unadjusted 5.0 percent in July.

While unemployment declined slightly in the state in July, Georgia lost 16,700 non-farm jobs, with the bulk of those among seasonal workers in local education, as schools closed for the summer.

The 14 metro areas of the state and their job changes from June to July include:

Albany, down 800, or 1.2 percent, from 65,700 to 64,900. Athens, down 100, or one-tenth percent, from 80,700 to 80,600. Atlanta, down 6,500, or three-tenths percent, from 2,391,800 to 2,385,300. Augusta, down 2,800, or 1.3 percent, from 218,500 to 215,700. Brunswick, up 200, or four-tenths percent, from 46,300 to 46,500. Columbus, down 1,000, or eight-tenth percent, from 123,800 to 122,800. Dalton, down 500, or six-tenths percent, from 79,100 to 78,600. Gainesville, down 700, or 1.0 percent, from 71,600 to 70,900. Hinesville, down 300, or 1.7 percent, from 17,900 to 17,600. Macon, down 1,600, or 1.6 percent, from 101,700 to 100,100. Rome, down 200, or one-half percent, from 43,600 to 43,400. Savannah, down 700, or four-tenths percent, from 155,900 to 155,200. Valdosta, down 400, or seven-tenths percent, from 55,400 to 55,000. Warner Robins, down 300, or one-half percent, from 54,800 to 54,500.
