State labor department's 12th annual job fair to be televised statewide tomorrow
ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Labor's 12th annual televised job fair will be carried statewide on Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) Wednesday, June 28, from 7-9 p.m. The live broadcast, entitled Job Fair 2006, will originate from Atlanta and Albany, and be simulcast over WALB-TV10.
Job Fair 2006 will feature the services available for workers in Rabun County and other areas hit by plant closures and layoffs to assist them in transitioning into new and promising careers. It will showcase Operation Welcome Home, a special initiative by the Georgia Department of Labor and its workforce partners to help military personnel returning to civilian life after serving in the war in Iraq and Afghanistan get a job or change careers, as well as the services available to veterans all the time. Viewers will learn how the department is utilizing technology to better serve customers, about an entrepreneurial program for people with disabilities, and the variety of services to help youth transition into the workplace.
Among the guests scheduled to appear on Job Fair 2006 are economist Roger Tutterow, PhD, dean of the Stetson School of Business at Mercer University; Willie Adams, M.D., mayor, Albany; Roy Campbell, mayor emeritus, city councilman, Thomasville; Jeff Sinyard, chairman, Dougherty County Commission; Kit Dunlap, president and chief executive officer, Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce; and Cornelius Butler, founder of Butler New Media.
Career experts will be available to answer questions from viewers across the state who wish to call during the job fair. Last year, some 3,500 viewers called in and talked directly with a job counselor. Viewers may also ask questions and receive immediate answers over the Internet. Job Fair 2006 will be Webcast, which will allow people to watch over the Internet. To participate in the Web cast, or ask questions, visit the labor department's Web site at www.dol.state.ga.us.
