Thurmond announces approval of trade act assistance for former Swift-Galey workers in Columbus
ATLANTA - State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that about 800 former employees of the Swift-Galey textile plant in Muscogee County may be qualified for additional reemployment assistance as a result of the certification of a Trade Act petition. The company's last day of operation was Oct. 30.
The Trade Act petition, which was initially denied by the U. S. Department of Labor, was reconsidered and approved when the application was resubmitted. Commissioner Thurmond made an official request to the U. S. Department of Labor to have the petition reconsidered. And, the state labor department provided guidance and support in the resubmission of the request.
"Approval of this assistance by the U. S. Department of Labor is wonderful news," said Commissioner Thurmond. "It means that significant additional resources, including job training, will be available to help Swift-Galey workers successfully transition into new careers. I'm pleased that we have been able to work with Swift-Galey and the U.S. Department of Labor to get the approval for this additional assistance for the workers who lost their jobs through no fault of their own."
The Trade Act petition was certified by the U.S. Department of Labor, which determined that the workers lost their jobs due to increased foreign competition. Former employees of the company who were laid off due to lack of work between Sept. 11, 2005, and Dec. 6, 2008, may be eligible for the Trade Act benefits. The Georgia Department of Labor is currently providing assistance to the workers.
Reemployment assistance that may be available to former employees includes employment counseling, job search, job placement, relocation assistance, remedial education, General Education Development (GED) diploma preparation, occupational training, and health insurance tax credit. Additional unemployment insurance benefits may be available for up to 130 weeks for individuals who qualify to enroll in education or training programs approved by the Georgia Department of Labor.
Former employees of Swift-Galey who are interested in finding out if they qualify for any of these benefits or want to obtain more information about reemployment assistance should call the Georgia Department of Labor's Columbus Career Center at (706) 649-7423.
