Athens to host Georgia Workforce and Touch the Future-Transition Conference next week

ATLANTA The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that the 2006 Georgia Workforce and Touch the Future-Transition Conference will be held in Athens, Tuesday through Friday, Oct. 31-Nov. 3, at the Athens Classic Center.

This is the first time that the two annual conferences -- the Workforce Conference, which focuses on employment-related issues, and the Touch the Future Conference, which focuses on issues surrounding assistive technology and education for people with disabilities -- have been held simultaneously. This year's conference will celebrate the fifth anniversary of the merger of the Georgia Department of Human Resources Division of Rehabilitation Services and the Georgia Department of Labor.

"During the last five years, we have laid the foundation for a fully integrated Georgia employment security system," said State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond. "This combined conference will highlight those efforts and herald the dawning of a new day for Georgians with disabilities. It's my hope that this conference will serve as a catalyst that will inspire state and local leaders to address unmet challenges and provide answers to unresolved problems that people with disabilities face daily."

The conference is designed to allow participants to explore state-of-the-art tools, techniques, principles, strategies, and innovative technologies that will help Georgians prepare for future workplace success.

General sessions with noted speakers and workshops on a variety of topics will be held throughout the conference, which is expected to attract about 2,000 attendees.

The conference will feature such participants as Kathy Cox, superintendent, Georgia Department of Education; John Hager, assistant secretary, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, U.S. Department of Education; Paul D. Barnes, Atlanta Regional Commissioner, Social Security Administration; Dr. Helen Parker, Regional Administrator, Employment and Training Administration, U.S. Department of Labor; Dr. Jeffrey Rosensweig, director, Global Perspectives Program, Goizueta Business School, Emory University; Heidi Davison, mayor, Athens/Clarke County; Dr. Flora W. Tydings, president, Athens Technical College; Don Nelson, associate editor of the Athens Banner-Herald; and, Liz Persaud, Tools For Life.

Commissioner Thurmond initiated the State Workforce Conference in 1999. Previously, it has been held in Atlanta, Savannah, Athens, Macon, Columbus, and Albany.
