Thurmond to participate in kick-off of new employment program in Albany
ATLANTA State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond will participate in ceremonies launching a new employment initiative for people with disabilities in Albany. The event will be held Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 2 p.m. at the newly-constructed Advocacy Resource Center (ARC) at 901 Pine Ave. in Albany.
"I'm excited about the new services that this initiative will make available to people with disabilities in Southwest Georgia," said Thurmond. "It's certain to have a positive impact on the ability of many to become self-sufficient, productive workers. This initiative is the latest effort by the Georgia Department of Labor and its partner agencies and organizations to ensure that people with disabilities have equal access in the workplace."
The Albany ARC and the Wiregrass Rehabilitation Center (WRC) of Dothan, Alabama, have entered into a cooperative agreement with the Georgia Department of Labor to provide training and employment-related services to individuals with disabilities referred by the department. Annette Bowling is the executive director of the ARC, while Jack Sasser, ED.D., is the executive director of the WRC. Both will participate in the dedication ceremonies.
The labor department's Division of Rehabilitation Services includes: Vocational Rehabilitation Services, which assists people with disabilities in obtaining employment; Disability Adjudication, which adjudicates U. S. Social Security disability claims; Business Enterprise Program, which assists legally blind workers in becoming self-reliant by operating vending sites in government facilities; Georgia Industries for the Blind, which provides manufacturing work for blind workers; and Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation, which provides physical rehabilitation to assist people with disabilities in returning to the work force.
ARC is involved in a federal Work Certificate program that authorizes payment to individuals with certified disabilities based on training and job performance. Individuals completing the program are placed on jobs by an employment specialist who continues to monitor their progress on the job.
