Georgia's initial unemployment insurance claims decline in September
ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that 30,685 laid-off workers filed first-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits in September, down 10 percent from August. The claims were down mostly in trade and services, industries impacted by seasonal factors.
Initial claims were also down from 39,776 filed in September 2005 for an over-the-year decrease of 22.9 percent. Initial claims are considered to be a leading economic indicator, because they measure newly laid-off workers.
The 14 metro areas of the state and the changes in their initial claims from August to September are as follows:
Albany, down 208, or 28 percent, from 740 to 532. Athens, up five, or 1.1 percent, from 462 to 467. Atlanta, down 1,652, or 11 percent, from 14,537 to 12,885.
