Labor department will help laid-off workers at Glen Raven in Elberton
ATLANTA State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that the Georgia Department of Labor will provide assistance to employees who lose their jobs with Glen Raven Custom Fabrics in Elbert County.
Officials of Glen Raven have announced plans to close its Elberton plant, which employs 166 workers, and expand its Anderson, S. C. plant, which has 580 workers. The company has also announced that all Elberton employees will be offered jobs with the Anderson plant. The company manufactures fabric used in awnings, patio umbrellas, and marine products.
"I want workers at the Elberton plant that may be adversely affected by this plant closing to know that they are not alone in dealing with the problem," Commissioner Thurmond said. "We are prepared to assist them."
Staff from the labor department's rapid response unit will meet with company management to discuss a wide range of services available to any workers who may be laid off. These options include: on-site employee information sessions, unemployment compensation, job-search services, retraining options, resources of the labor department's career centers, surveys of workers to determine needs, special workshops on career options and resume writing and interviewing skills.
The Georgia Department of Labor conducts job search workshops, career counseling, and provides resource centers in each office. Some job seekers may also be eligible for occupational/skills training, on-the-job training, General Education Development (GED) preparation and testing, and supportive services such as child-care assistance, transportation assistance and meals while enrolled in full-time training.
The Elbert County area is served the Georgia Department of Labor's Elberton Career Center at 5 Seaboard St. in Elberton. The telephone number is (706) 213-2028. However, effected workers may get assistance from any of the department's 53 career centers statewide.
