Workforce development seminars for youth set for Columbus area schools this week
ATLANTA The Georgia Department of Labor will conduct workforce development seminars for youth in Muscogee County schools in conjunction with the 6th annual Georgia Workforce Conference, which is also being held in Columbus Nov. 3 and 4. The seminars will focus on various career and training opportunities available for youth in the area.
The department's Youth Motivational Task Force (YMTF) will conduct a workforce development seminar on Wednesday, Nov. 3, from 1-2:15 p.m. for eighth graders at Marshall Middle School, 1830 Shepherd Dr.
A second seminar will be held the following day, Thursday, Nov. 4, from 8-9:15 a.m. for seniors at Carver High School, 3100 Eighth St.
Speakers for both seminars include representatives of the labor department's Columbus Employer Committee, marketing representatives from the Columbus Career Center, and a motivational speaker called "The Spark Plug." The seminars will also include a presentation from the Union Construction Apprenticeship program and the Hope Scholarship program.
Since it was established by the state labor department in 1993, the task force has assisted in preparing thousands of Georgia youth for life after high school. The primary function of the YMTF is to encourage youth to plan early for their careers. The task force was designed to increase student awareness of the various career opportunities and to encourage interaction between businesses and students in an effort to mainstream students into industry and government.
The department co-sponsors the program at Georgia colleges, technical schools, high schools, as well as junior high and middle schools.
