SUMMER YOUTH JOBS PROGRAM UNDERWAY IN NORTHWEST GEORGIA
ATLANTA -- An employment program designed to place high school students on summer and full-time jobs is in full swing in northwest Georgia.
Called "Youth Opportunities 2000 -- Georgia's Future Workforce," the program allows high school students and recent graduates to receive on-the-job training with employers in Catoosa, Dade, and Walker counties.
The program is an initiative of the Georgia Department of Labor's Northwest Georgia office in Fort Oglethorpe.
"Youth are our future leaders, but they must learn to live and live to learn," said office manager Dot Hale, who is spear-heading the project. "When young people learn how a machine works, or how government works, or why a plant thrives in the sunlight, new worlds open up to them."
Labor department personnel recently conducted summer youth service workshops in area high schools, where about 200 students registered for summer and full-time employment. Seventy-five area employers have committed to hire the young people either for the summer or permanently.
Employers wanting to hire summer youth are encouraged to contact the labor department's Fort Oglethorpe office at (706) 861-1990, and young people wanting a job should ask for employment service specialists Jackie Goolsby or Diane Ball at the same number.
