FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SHORTAGE OF SKILLED WORKERS THREATENS METRO ATLANTA'S ECONOMIC PROSPERITY
ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that a persistent mismatch between available jobs and available workers threatens to slow down metro Atlanta's economy.
"Growth in metro Atlanta's workforce is not keeping pace with the rapid growth of jobs," Thurmond said. "Last year, metro Atlanta's economy generated more than 109,400 new jobs, but the civilian workforce has increased by only 81,910 workers. Unless we increase the size of our workforce, the shortage could threaten the area's future economic prosperity.
"We can narrow the gap by providing non-traditional workers with the training and other assistance needed to bring them into the workforce. For example, we are partnering with the Department of Technical and Adult Education, the public schools, and others to 'upskill' untapped segments of our indigenous population. With proper training, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, former welfare recipients, and rehabilitated ex-offenders can play a major role in the solving of our state's labor shortage."
The strong job growth and lack of skilled workers has led to historically low unemployment in the metro Atlanta area. March's 2.7 percent was only one-tenth percent higher than the area's lowest jobless rate ever recorded. The rate was down from 2.8 percent in February, because more than 20,000 new jobs were added in trade and service-related industries. The rate was 3.3 percent in March 1999.
Georgia's unemployment rate of 3.4 percent in March is the lowest ever recorded for that month. The jobless rate was down from 3.5 percent in February and 4.2 percent in March of 1999.
