FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE U.I. RECIPIENTS DECREASE BY 5,600 IN MARCH

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that the number of people in Georgia drawing unemployment insurance benefits decreased by almost 5,600 from February to March.

Unemployment insurance claims declined among people working outside in agriculture and construction, as well as those in trade and service-related industries.

In March, 37,984 people drew $23,659,655 in jobless benefits, down from 43,554 who drew $28,130,309 in February. In March 1999, 40,705 drew $25,288,589. The maximum weekly unemployment insurance benefit is $264.

The number of people filing claims for unemployment insurance benefits in the state's major metropolitan areas from February to March is as follows:

-- Albany, claims down by 142 from 593 to 451.

-- Athens, claims down by 47 from 386 to 339.

-- Atlanta, claims down by 1,342 from 13,413 to 12,071.

-- Augusta, claims down by 131 from 1,205 to 1,074.

-- Columbus, claims down by 217 from 1,043 to 826.
