FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

GLENNVILLE AREA WORKERS MAY BE QUALIFIED FOR ADDITIONAL REEMPLOYMENT ASSISTANCE

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael L. Thurmond said today that approximately 70 former employees of TAM Industries in Glennville may be qualified for additional reemployment assistance as a result of the certification of a Trade Act petition. The workers were involved in the production of women's shirts and blouses.

The Trade Adjustment Assistance petition was certified by the U.S. Department of Labor on Nov. 5, 1999. The U.S. Department of Labor has determined that the workers lost their jobs due to increased imports. The petitions cover all workers laid off on or after Sept. 27, 1998.

Reemployment assistance that may be available to former employees includes employment counseling, testing, job referral and job placement, job search, financial and stress management workshops, out-of-area job search and relocation assistance, basic/remedial education, General Education Development (GED) diploma preparation, and occupational training. Trade Readjustment Allowances may be available to individuals who enroll in education or training programs approved by the Georgia Department of Labor.

Former employees of TAM Industries who are interested in obtaining more information about reemployment assistance should go to the Glennville Multipurpose Building at 706 North Caswell St. in Glennville on Friday, Feb. 25, at either 8 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. Complete information on all reemployment services will be provided at that time.

Any former employee who cannot go to the Glennville Multipurpose Building on Feb. 25, should contact the local Georgia Department of Labor office in Vidalia. The office is located at 16 Carter Center on Queen Street, and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The telephone
