FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BARNESVILLE AREA WORKERS MAY BE QUALIFIED FOR ADDITIONAL
REEMPLOYMENT ASSISTANCE
ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael L. Thurmond said today that approximately 240 former employees of The William Carter Co. in Barnesville may be qualified for additional reemployment assistance as a result of the certification of Trade Act petitions. The workers were involved in the production of infant wear.
The Trade Adjustment Assistance and North American Free Trade Agreement Transitional Adjustment Assistance petitions were certified by the U.S. Department of Labor on Dec. 7, 1999. The U.S. Department of Labor has determined that the workers lost their jobs due to increased imports. The petitions cover all workers laid off on or after Sept. 24, 1998, and through Dec. 7, 2001.
Reemployment assistance that may be available to former employees includes employment counseling, testing, job referral and job placement, job search, financial and stress management workshops, out-of-area job search and relocation assistance, basic/remedial education, General Education Development (GED) diploma preparation, and occupational training. Trade Readjustment Allowances may be available to individuals who enroll in education or training programs approved by the Georgia Department of Labor.
Former employees of The William Carter Co. who are interested in obtaining more information about reemployment assistance should go to the Barnesville Civic Center, 685 Forsyth St. in Barnesville on either Wednesday or Thursday, Feb. 2-3, between 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Complete information on all reemployment services will be provided at that time.
