LABOR DEPARTMENT TO SPONSOR ESSAY AND PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTESTS AS PART OF FEBRUARY'S BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION
ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that the Georgia Department of Labor will sponsor essay and public speaking contests for middle and high school students in Georgia, as part of the department's eighth annual celebration of Black History Month in February.
Winners of the essay and public speaking contests will be honored during ceremonies from 911:30 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 24, at the Sheraton Hotel at 165 Courtland St. in downtown Atlanta. The labor department is the only state agency that officially celebrates Black History Month with month-long activities.
The public speaking competition, which is open to all high school students in grades 9-12, will be held Friday, Feb. 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in room 258 of the labor department's headquarters building at 148 International Blvd. in downtown Atlanta.
Students may speak on one of three subjects: "The Challenges of an African-American in a MultiCultural Society," "Breaking Through Cultural Stereotypes in the New Millennium," and "The Challenges and Successes of Living in a Culturally Diverse Society." Speeches will be three to five minutes each, and will be judged on presentation and content. The first place winner will receive $100, second place $50, and third place $30. Students must submit an entry deadline by Friday, Jan. 28, to Lloyd E. Romans, Georgia Department of Labor, Suite 700, Sussex Place, 148 International Blvd., N. Theme of the essay contest is "Heritage and Horizons - The African-American Legacy and Challenges of the 21st Century." Competition is open to all students in grades 6-12. Essays must

be a maximum of three pages, typed, and double-spaced. The essays will be judged on content, creativity, clarity, and grammar. Winners will be selected from grades 6-8, 9-10, and 11-12. Each will receive $50.
An entry form must be completed and submitted with the essay by 5 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 17, to Thelma Bowen, Georgia Department of Labor-Essay Contest, 148 International Blvd., N.
