FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GEORGIA'S 3.2 PERCENT UNEMPLOYMENT RATE LOWEST EVER RECORDED
ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that December's 3.2 percent unemployment rate was the lowest monthly rate ever recorded in Georgia, since the state began keeping records in 1970. The December rate was down from 3.4 percent in November. The rate was 3.6 percent in December of 1998.
"You have to go back three decades when our population and workforce were much smaller than they are today to find unemployment this low," Thurmond said. "With a state economy that is generating more than 100,000 new jobs each year, our focus has shifted from finding jobs for people to finding people for jobs. To meet this challenge, we will be increasing our efforts to partner with the Department of Technical and Adult Education, the public schools, and whatever other resources are available to us to 'upskill' our workforce with additional skill training and education. In a sense, the labor department has become a retailer of trained workers."
Strong job growth continued in Georgia in 1999, with the total number of jobs reaching a record 3,997,500 in December. During the year, 155,500 new jobs were added, up from 3,842,000 in December of 1998, an increase of 4.0 percent.
Metro Atlanta led the way in job growth, adding 113,600 new jobs, from 2,093,300 to 2,206,900, a 5.4 percent growth rate. Jobs in metro Athens rose by 2,700, from 74,700 to 77,400, a 3.6 percent increase. Columbus and Savannah added 3,500 new jobs each. Columbus' jobs rose from 120,800 to 124,300, a 2.9 percent rise, while Savannah went from 135,700 to 139,200, a 2.6 percent increase.
Other metropolitan areas of the state recorded job gains during the year, as well. They are as follows:
