FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE U.I. RECIPIENTS INCREASE BY 6,900 IN JULY

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that the number of people in Georgia drawing unemployment insurance benefits rose by 6,900 from June to July.

The rise in jobless claims came mostly among manufacturing industries which normally lay off workers temporarily during the summer months.

In July, 45,524 people drew $23,201,289 in jobless benefits, up from 38,632 who drew $24,751,886 in June. In July, 1998, 49,700 drew $24,563,556. The maximum weekly unemployment insurance benefit is $264.

The number of people filing claims for unemployment insurance benefits in the state's major metropolitan areas from June to July is as follows:

-- Albany, claims up by 70 from 572 to 642.

-- Athens, claims up by 26 from 427 to 453.

-- Atlanta, claims up by 1,744 from 11,078 to 12,822.

-- Augusta, claims up by 167 from 1,228 to 1,395.

-- Columbus, claims up by 70 from 828 to 898.

-- Macon, claims up by 54 from 1,131 to 1,185.
