GEORGIA'S 3.7 PERCENT JOBLESS RATE LOWEST EVER FOR OCTOBER

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that Georgia continues to have record low unemployment. The unemployment rate for October is 3.7 percent, which is the lowest ever recorded for that month. The rate was down from 4.1 percent in September and 4.2 percent in October 1998.

"Unemployment is at all-time lows and job growth continues at a steady pace, but Georgia faces a serious shortage of skilled workers," said Thurmond. "This situation creates the ideal opportunity to launch a new job training system for our state. On Dec. 9-10, we will host the statewide Georgia Workforce Conference in Atlanta, bringing together highly-respected leaders from business, education and government, including Gov. Roy Barnes, to discuss the development of a world-class workforce."

The focus of the conference will be the implementation of the Workforce Investment Act of 1998. Activation of this landmark legislation will shift responsibility for workforce training from the federal to the state and local levels. A highlight of the conference will be the unveiling of the Georgia Department of Labor's Workforce Center, which will showcase the new system of delivering a full-range of customer-focused services at the local level.

The Georgia Workforce Conference is set for Thursday and Friday, Dec. 9-10, at the World Congress Center in Atlanta. Information about the conference is available from the labor department's website at www.dol.state.ga.us, or by calling Cathy Bexley at (404) 656-3050.

During the past year, jobs in Georgia have increased to 3,922,500, up 132,500, a growth rate of 3.5 percent. Only metro Macon, which lost 500 jobs down to 149,700, has failed to add jobs. The other metro areas and their job increases from October 1998 to October 1999 are as follows:
