GEORGIA'S JOBLESS RATE DROPS SLIGHTLY TO 3.7 PERCENT IN JANUARY
ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Marti Fullerton said today that Georgia's unemployment rate declined slightly to 3.7 percent in January, its lowest point for the month in 28 years. The jobless rate was down from 3.8 percent in December. It was 4.5 percent in January 1997.
"We're always glad to see the unemployment rate drop, although this time the decline really doesn't signal much change in the job market or the state's economy in general," said Fullerton. "The job picture is basically holding steady. Normally, we expect to see an increase in the unemployment rate between December and January because people who held temporary retail jobs during the Christmas holidays are laid off, and the inclement winter weather takes a toll in the outdoor construction industry. But, for the last four years the rate has virtually remained unchanged in January. This is due largely to the stable nature of our state's economy."
While Georgia lost 76,800 jobs in January, most were seasonal in nature. Nonfarm employment declined to 3,654,300, down from 3,731,100 in December. Yet, even with the seasonal job losses, the state has added 136,300 new jobs in the past year, up by 3.9 percent from 3,518,000 in January 1997.
The state's civilian labor force, which is the number of people working plus those unemployed but actively looking for a job, was down by more than 50,000 during the month, but it is up by more than 73,000 in a year.
