BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA

A PROCLAMATION

KIDNEY DISEASE AWARENESS AND EDUCATION WEEK

WHEREAS:

Nearly 1 7,000 Georgians are among the approximately 500,000 Americans who are currently being treated for End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) , a disease caused by the loss of renal function. The leading causes of ESRD in Georgia include hypertension and diabetes ; and

WHEREAS:

T he only treatment for ESRD is dialysis or kidney transplantation . However, t ransplantation is limited due to the shortage of donors. The majority of patients undergo regular dialysis treatments . The State of Georgia has over 300 dialysis facilities and three t ransplant facilities ; and

WHEREAS:

Nephrology nurses function as educators, direct patient care givers , and coordinators to help patients manage thei r lives while effectively dealing with health issues . They play a key role in providing kidney disease patients with dialysis and related treatments across the entire country; and

WHEREAS:

It is estimated that the number of patients with ESRD increases over 8 percent annually. With so many Americans suffering from ESRD , the goal of dedicated health professionals and organizations is to raise national and state awareness and support so that effective education , treatment solutions , and cures can be found ; now

THEREFORE:

I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim August 1-5 , 2016 , as KIDNEY DISEASE AWARENESS EDUCATION WEEK .
