ICYMI: Kemp Aims to Reduce High-Stakes Testing; Gang Database Now Operational
Atlanta, GA - On Tuesday, February 4th, Governor Brian P. Kemp joined State School Superintendent, First Lady Marty Kemp, State Senator P. K. Martin (R - Lawrenceville), local and state educational leaders, and special guests to unveil Senate Bill 367. S.B. 367 will reduce high-stakes K-12 testing and improve educational outcomes for Georgia students.
On Wednesday, February 5th, Governor Kemp and Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Vic Reynolds announced the GBI's Gang Database was operational, with over 1,000 confirmed gangs and approximately 17,000 members listed.
Reducing High-Stakes Testing
WJBF (Augusta): "Tina Taylor is a local mom of a student who has already finished high school courses and is now onto college work through dual enrollment said, 'I think they should be cut because everybody is not a test taker and it limits what they can get exposed to because if they don't pass the standardized tests, then they can get into these specialty programs which hinders the child. And not everybody is a good test taker.'"
AJC: In a move that will likely please many teachers and students, Gov. Brian Kemp on Tuesday announced he will back legislation that reduces the number of high-stakes tests in schools.
Kemp traveled the state last year and heard from school leaders, parents and teachers who complained about how tests had come to dominate classroom time. 'Today, we're sending a clear message: We hear you and we've got your back," he said in a brief speech in his office. "Georgia simply tests too much.'"
