Corn-Soybean Expo Benefits Producers
In general, these are very trying times for Georgia agriculture, especially for soybean farmers here. The overall crop was devastated by the prolonged drought, and the small amount of beans that will be marketed will most likely be sold at a very disappointing level. It certainly would be easy to have a negative attitude about the crop and say, "why bother?" However, it's during times like these when there is the most need to try and do the best and most efficient job .possible to squeeze out even a little profit. At this point I feel there are two areas where we can work to make this difficult situation a little better.
Our guest columnist this week is Steve Newberry, president, Georgia Soybean Association, 1001 North Central Avenue, P.O. Box 2007, Tifton, GA 31793, (404) 382-
2326.________________________
The first thing we should all do is stay in touch with our congressmen , concerning everything from the recent drought to the new farm bill. By all means keep them informed. Help them help us.
Secondly, keep yourselves informed. Take advantage of any opportunities to learn about the latest , and best methods concerning every aspect of the soybean industry. One opportunity is the upcoming 1991 Georgia Corn-Soybean Expo to be ' held Tuesday, Jan. 22, 1991, at the Macon Hilton. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the program getting underway at 9:15 a.m. Jimmy Dixon, president of the Georgia Corn Growers Association, and I will give the opening re- marks.
The afternoon session, which will begin with a little wit from humorist Dr. Wayne Ates, will include such topics as tillage and cultural practices for improving corn, wheat and soybean profits; new insecticides and techniques for controlling insects in corn and soybeans; and new herbicides and techniques for - controlling weeds in corn and soybeans.
There is a $5 registration fee for the expo, and door prizes will be awarded throughout the day. I encourage all corn and soybean growers to attend what should prove to - be a very informative meeting.

Agriculture Day Contest Announced

Each year, the president of the United States proclaims the third week of March as National Agriculture Week to focus attention on our nation's agriculture industry and to pay tribute to those men and women who produce America's food and fiber. As part of this observance, the first day of spring, March 21, is designated National Agriculture Day.
In recognition of this event, the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin and the Georgia Agribusiness Council are coordinating an Agriculture Day contest to focus attention on Georgia's agriculture industry. A total of $800 in prize money will be awarded to Georgians who are declared winners in the 1991 Ag Day Contest.
The contest has two categories, statement and photo/art. The statement category is divided into three student classifications grades 4-5, 6-8, and 9-12 and the photo/art category is open to adults only.
A first, second and third place entry will be chosen from each age division of the statement category and from the photo/art category. Contest judges reserve the right to award honorable mentions, but no prize money will be awarded for these designations.
First place prize money is $100, second place $75, and third place $50. The deadline for entries is Feb. 25, 1991, so contestants are urged to get started now.
General Guidelines
* Name, age, grade, school, home county and phone number (including area code) must be typed or written legibly in ink and attached to the top of statements; photos and artwork also must have name, county and phone number attached on a separate sheet of paper.
* All entries become the property of the Georgia Department of Agriculture and cannot be returned to the owner.
* The contest is restricted to Georgia residents. Winners will be announced in the Market Bulletin. Mail contest en-

* Only one entry per person is allowed. Any entries not in compliance with the contest guidelines will be rejected.
Statement Category Guidelines
* Category is open only to students in the following grade levels: 4-5, 6-8 and 9-12.
* In keeping with the national theme, Honoring America's Providers, contes-

tants are asked to complete the following sentence in 50 words or less: "I am grateful for Georgia farmers because..." printed in ink. Hand-written entries should be on lined paper; typed copies on unlined paper. Pages should be written or typed on one side only.
* All entries must be neat and readable. Entries exceeding the 50-word limit will be disqualified.
Photo/Art Category Guidelines
* The photo/art category is open only to adults.
* Entries may be photo or art, but only one entry per person is allowed.

Mathis Dairy Recalls Violative Products
Mathis Dairy, a Metro Atlanta based operation, has voluntarily withdrawn and removed from trade milk and dairy products bearing the expiration dates Jan. 8 and Jan 11 after violative levels of aflatoxin were identified during the Georgia Department of Agriculture's routine sampling procedures. At press time approximately 40,000 gallons of milk are suspected to have been contaminated at the time of processing.
Department screening procedures identified aflatoxin levels of .67 and .69 parts per billion in samples collected, above the legal maximum of .50 parts per billion allowed by the Food and Drug Administration. The problem is suspected to have developed when contaminated peanut meal was fed to the Mathis Dairy herds.
Aflatoxin, a naturally occurring fungus which has been shown to produce cancer in laboratory rats, grows in corn and other crops during drought conditions. Because of drought that many Georgia counties experienced this year, the Department of Agriculture had earlier advised all farmers to take advantage of the agency's voluntary program to screen feed grains and feed products for aflatoxin, particularly those being fed to lactating animals.
Although the Mathis dairy products posed no immediate health hazard, the contaminated milk and milk products delivered to stores and home delivery customers during the New Year's holiday were destroyed. Also, buttermilk with the expiration dates of Jan. 27 and Jan. 30, processed on the same day and suspected to contain "afiatoxin, was pulled. Consumers were advised to return Mathis products with the previously mentioned expiration dates to the point of purchase.
An additional 5,600 gallons of raw milk produced by one of the Mathis Dairy farms in Montezuma, Ga., were destroyed Jan. 4 after laboratory analyses confirmed violative levels of aflatoxin contamination. The Department will continue to monitor these and other dairy products to assure that aflatoxin levels are in accordance with regulatory guidelines.
